There’s not a huge difference between the companies that offer moving trucks for rent, but it’s a good idea to get familiar with your choices if you need one. There will be some slight differences between pricing and availability, but knowing the full scope of your options will give you the most flexibility when it comes time to pick one. With that said, here are the top five moving truck rental companies in the U.S.
Moving Truck Rental Companies – U-Haul
The name you’re probably most familiar with among moving truck rental companies is U-Haul and there’s good reason. They’ve been in business since 1945 and you can find one of their locations in just about any part of the U.S. One of the big benefits of renting with U-Haul is that you can return the truck to different locations, of which there are more than 20,000, so it’s easy to arrange pick up and drop off wherever you need. Another advantage that U-Haul has over others is that they tend to have more availability than other truck rental companies since they are such a large company with so many locations. Not to mention, they are usually the most affordable too.
Moving Truck Rental Companies – Penske
While Penske doesn’t have anywhere near the number of locations that U-Haul does, they offer mostly the same services and rank as one of the most affordable in the industry. The thing that sets Penske apart is that they are known for their excellent customer service, which is reflected in their online customer reviews. Penske is a particularly affordable option for long-distance moves, and they offer the same one-way booking that U-Haul does in terms of pick-up and drop-off locations, as well as a nice discount program.

Moving Truck Rental Companies – Budget
If you’re moving locally (less than 100 miles), Budget is one of your best options since their prices are the most competitive there. This is in part because they have much lower per mile rates than Penske or U-Haul—as much as 50% lower—but not as low as Enterprise or Home Depot. Like Penske, Budget has several discounts that apply to many different groups and offer up to 20% off. The drawbacks of renting from Budget are that they have a limited number of truck sizes available, and their additional services and equipment cost more than some of the others.
Moving Truck Rental Companies – Home Depot
Home Depot is a great choice if you have a short local move. They have a program called “Load N’ Go” that offers affordable rentals for 75 minutes if you need to move just one large item or need to quickly move a small load across town. Their long-distance truck rentals go through Penske, so you’ll find the same options there, but Home Depot is generally thought to have a better website when it comes to planning your move. The main benefit of renting with Home Depot is that they’re the most affordable if you need to move something locally that won’t take long.
Moving Truck Rental Companies – Enterprise
Enterprise has the biggest variety of truck rental sizes, so you’ll have more choice when you need to find a specific vehicle, whether it’s a flatbed, van, or 26-foot moving truck. They also have very low per mile rates compared to most others, which makes them an ideal fit if you need a large truck for long-distance moving. The downside to Enterprise is that they don’t offer one-way pickup and drop off like so many others and their discount program is not nearly as robust. Additionally, they don’t have as many locations as some of the others on this list.
